Our Plan Exclusions

Like all pet health insurance policies, our plans contain exclusions, which are treatments that are not covered. We’ve taken a lot of time and care designing our plans and determining the exclusions. Our exclusions help us give you high quality plans at affordable rates in line with the ASPCA’s beliefs.

Supporting the ASPCA’s Beliefs

Our plans were designed to uphold the ASPCA’s standards for humane treatment of animals. For example, we offer coverage in some plans for treatments the ASPCA encourages, like spaying and neutering. We categorically exclude elective treatments the ASPCA opposes like tail docking, ear cropping, and the removal of dewclaws.

Keeping Premiums Low and Payouts High

Our exclusions also help us keep your premiums as low and reimbursements as high as we can. These exclusions typically represent treatments for conditions that would require higher premiums for all of our insured pets, such as congenital or hereditary disorders and multiple incidents of foreign object ingestion within a 12-month period. Pre-existing or recurring illnesses or injuries prior to the effective date of the policy are also excluded from all plans except the Sterling Plan, unless 180 days have passed since cure and last treatment. In the case of the Sterling Plan, some recurring conditions are covered.

Also excluded are treatments without agreed-upon standards in the veterinary community for practices and costs. Exclusions of this type include acupuncture, chiropractic or rehabilitative therapies, treatments for behavioral problems, and holistic, homeopathic, and herbal supplies and treatments.

In addition, we work hard to make our wellness care payouts as generous as possible, but only offer coverage for certain types of dental cleanings.
