German Wirehaired Pointer smiling

“Mercury is 8 years old, but he still gets hungry for the unusual. I had a sequined blouse hanging on a hanger on a doorknob, and he devoured the front half of the shirt. We rushed him to our veterinarian. They took an X-ray and found that he would need surgery to remove the blouse. During the surgery, our veterinarian found a tumor on Mercury’s kidney and removed it right away. It was good that we an ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan for Mercury! He is now happy and healthy again.” -Melanie R., Willows, CA

Basenji sleeping

Our pets can do some quirky things, but even the strangest behaviors may have reasons behind them. Here are explanations of some common pet behaviors. Does your furry friend have any of these habits? Tell us about it in the comments!

Q: Why does my dog run or bark while sleeping?

A: Your dog is probably dreaming, just like a person who walks or talks in their sleep. Dogs experience the same stages of sleep as humans, including rapid eye movement (REM), which is the time when we might move around. Older canines spend more than 10% of their time asleep in the REM stage, while puppies are in dreamland for a more considerable amount of time. Learn more

Note: Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions about your pet’s specific behavior. Your veterinarian can give you advice about your individual pet's needs and rule out any potential medical issue.

Golden Retriever laying with a tennis ball

“Otis jumped out of an open window to chase a group of wild turkeys that often go through our yard. Otis landed on his behind and froze. I picked him up and took him straight to the veterinary emergency clinic. I noticed that he was bleeding while we were in the waiting room. The deep puncture probably came from landing on a rock. There was also quite a bit of swelling that had to come down before X-rays could be done.

After a long recovery, Otis is wagging and chasing his tail again. I am happy to have an ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan for Otis, especially for the unexpected.” -Avery N., Morris, CT

French Bulldog laying on a blanket

“I was over at a friend’s house, and we were playing a little game of kick ball gently in the living room using a yoga ball. The ball went directly into the face of Sally, my French Bulldog, and her eye turned red and puffy. Our veterinarian discovered that the accident had caused a corneal ulcer. It took a week for Sally to recover, and we are much more careful around balls.

Our ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan has helped out a lot, and I wish that I had gotten it sooner. I could have used it for usual puppy things and the time Sally stepped on a bee.” -Cara P., Bridgeville, CA
