Sleeping Beagle

“For the last few years, Sasha’s ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan has provided support through a number of health events. Most recently, our 12-year-old Beagle almost died from acute liver failure. We are grateful for the support, the huge payment for her care and the help with Sasha’s end of life expenses. All the customer service folks I've dealt with over the years have been caring, friendly and professional. I plan to enroll my future pets in ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans, and I have referred numerous friends and family members.” -Daniel L., Prescott, AZ

Dog running on grass

“I set a box of canned cat food inside the door, and I came back to find two cans mutilated and empty. Charlie, my dog, had lacerated his palate chewing the cans open. He then vomited for a day or two after that, but was luckily able to pass the metal remnants. We watched him carefully for any other signs of damage, and he is doing well today. It is such a help having an ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan, and I preach its benefits to others.” –Sam G., Carson City, NV

cat with food bowl

Our pets can do some quirky things, but even the strangest behaviors may have reasons behind them. Here are explanations of some common pet behaviors. Does your furry friend have any of these habits? Tell us about it in the comments!

Q: Why does my cat cover his food?

A: When cats cover their food, they’re taking a cue from their ancestors (a practice referred to as “caching”). It’s their way of hiding the scent of their tasty meal from scavengers—or in a housecat’s case, other pets. Finicky cats may also cover their food to let you know they’d prefer something else to eat. Note: Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions about your pet’s specific behavior. Your veterinarian can give you advice about your individual pet's needs and rule out any potential medical issue.

Yorkie sitting on brick

"Rosie is my darling Yorkie. She is so lovable and loves everyone. Sadly, she developed pancreatitis this year and has been back and forth to the veterinarian many times. I have to keep her on a restricted diet and medications.

It has become very costly, but thanks to our ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan, the burden has been much lighter. I am fortunate and thankful to have this insurance for her.

I hope we can get her completely well. I would love to have her around a few more years." -Rachel J., Sandpoint, ID
