One of the best ways to help an allergy-prone pet is to try to prevent exposure to allergens. Here are some pointers to make your pet’s environment a little healthier:

• If the pollen count is high, keep your pet inside or limit time outside.
• Wipe off your pet’s paws after going outdoors to remove pollen.
• Put plush toys in the freezer occasionally to help kill off dust mites.
• Wash your pet’s bedding regularly with a gentle fragrance-free detergent.
• Dust and vacuum frequently, especially in your pet’s favorite spots.

Be sure to visit your veterinarian to identify the source of your pet’s allergies and get specific treatment advice. Visit our blog for more tips on what to do if your pet has allergies.

Pet Speak: Sunday Night Emergency Requires Surgery and Hospital Stay

“One night, I noticed my beloved little Norwegian Forest Cat, Paul, was cowering and in pain.  It was a Sunday night so we found a veterinarian in the next town who would see him immediately. He discovered Paul had a kidney stone and was in serious trouble although we had brought him to the veterinarian in time.  Paul needed surgery as well as a hospital stay.  Thank heavens we had ASPCA Pet Health Insurance because our plan paid most of the bill.  Paul is home and we are all happy!”

Pet Photo Friday: A Good Back-Up Plan

“Thunder, my Bullmastiff, hit the side of a concrete fountain while running and he sliced the side of his face, breaking his tooth in half. After a trip to the emergency clinic and two more visits to aveterinarian, it cost me about $2,300. I don’t know what I would have done without ASPCA Pet Heath Insurance to cover a large portion of my bill. You never expect these extreme accidents to happen to your pet, but they do happen, and a few bad seconds can cost thousands of dollars. I fully recommend ASPCA Pet Health Insurance as a good back-up plan if the unexpectedhappens.”

A Bedlington Terrier with a history of hair-raising accidents probably would be happy to a be a landlubber after being pitched from a boat earlier this year.

Bred as hunters, Bedlington Terriers look like sheep, but they are known for having the hearts of lions. That’s a good thing because one Bedlington in particular has had to get himself out of a couple of scrapes.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance customer Becky C. tells us her dog, Carl, was tossed from the boat in which he was riding after the vessel hit a log. The dog was hit by the boat’s motor when he landed in the water. Carl suffered a few cuts that needed stitches, and he aspirated some water.

Luckily Carl’s OK now!
