Russ had signs of a urinary tract infection so I took him to the veterinarian and they found he had a urinary blockage. Russ went in for surgery and has since made a full recovery. Here is a very touching story Colleen T. of Cedar City, Utah* shared with us in memory of her beloved pug. Our deepest condolences go out to her. 

“My pug, Polly, was the love of my life. She brought me love, loyalty and comfort. Sadly, she was sick a lot and passed away at age 8 because of medical complications. When she died, I was left with an emptiness I cannot describe. Not long after, I unexpectedly bumped into a little male pug that was the spitting image of my Polly. He was able to keep me busy and help me heal.

Meanwhile, the veterinary bills for Polly arrived and I submitted them to ASPCA Pet Health Insurance. How people can afford these bills, I don’t know, but ASPCA Pet Health Insurance came through, and the bills were much less of a burden for me. I’m glad I could count on your help.”

Often when we think about preventing animal cruelty, we imagine animals across the country in ghastly situations. But we recently received a claim where another’s cruelty sadly hit close to home for one of our customers.

Not long after the Miller family* bought coverage for their cat, Bingo, they noticed that his leg was injured. Initially, they suspected that the wound was a result of an animal fight, as Bingo spends some of his time outdoors. But, after close examination and a series of X-rays at their vet, it turns out that he had been shot with a pellet gun, evident from the remaining bullet fragments in his leg. Bingo required same-day emergency surgery to repair his femur, which was smashed into two pieces.

Extensive recovery followed, which equated to mounting vet bills—$1,500 to be exact.

“Even though our cat’s welfare was most important, in the back of our minds, the money was still obviously a major concern,” the Millers told us. “…We really appreciated not only ASPCA Pet Health Insurance’s prompt action on this terrible matter but also their professional manner all around. We love him and are so glad that our decision to do everything possible to make him well again was supported due to our coverage!”

The Millers ended up receiving more than $1,100 in return for their claim. And Bingo is back at his window perch, monitoring the backyard.
