Fall 2012: A Time for Thanks and Inspiration
November is a special time to give thanks. We like to reflect on all the ways animals inspire us, especially during the ASPCA®'s annual Humane Awards Luncheon in New York City. The awards ceremony, which we sponsor each year, recognizes pets and individuals who have made a major impact on the lives of animals and their human companions.
This November marks the fifth consecutive year we've sponsored the ceremony to support our friends at the ASPCA! We also asked our customers and Facebook fans about pets who inspire them.
"I adopted Gracie when she was 10 months old. Sadly, Gracie had been abused, like too many animals. I didn't know to what extent, but we later found out she'd been shot with a pellet gun. I cried when I heard the news.
That's all behind her now. She has so many people who care about her, and she gets lots of love. I decided to get ASPCA Pet Health Insurance for her to make sure I have help giving her the medical care she needs."
–Evelyn O., Anaheim, CA
"I was 6 years old when we adopted Rags. He was hit by a car right in front of our home. I'll never forget watching my parents pick him up from the street. They rushed him to the veterinarian, though they were sure it was too late.
Rags was back home that day after only needing a few stitches. I was amazed, and that's when I decided to become a veterinarian. Rags lived another 12 happy years, and I received my degree 20 years after this incident."
–Dr. Erin Kelly, consulting veterinarian for ASPCA Pet Health Insurance

A Peek Behind the Scenes
Our office is filled with pet lovers who enjoy helping pet parents. It's also filled with our furry friends! Schelie K., who works for our dedicated Customer Satisfaction Department, shared her thoughts on working here:
"The atmosphere is great, especially since we can take our pets to work. I also love working with customers. Pet people are so caring and compassionate.
They've taught me a lot, too. I've learned about breeds I never knew existed and heard fascinating stories about how pets can impact our lives, like therapy dogs who can sense when their pet parents are having a seizure. Amazing!
Having pet insurance for my pets has also helped me. When I got a $1,200 bill for an emergency visit to the vet, it was a relief to know that a good portion would be reimbursed. Cheers to pet insurance!"
Dr. Mary Beth Leininger
Vice President of Veterinary Relations
The FTC recently held a workshop focusing on whether the Fairness to Pet Owners Act would ultimately lower pet prescription prices for consumers. The proposed legislation would require veterinary practitioners to provide a written prescription to each client.
The last panel of the workshop examined the contact lens industry as a case study after similar legislation had been passed for ophthalmologists. The panel members differed about whether the law had resulted in lower prices for contact lens consumers. The veterinary version could continue to build traction in the coming year.
