Two of the biggest differences between AKC (American Kennel Club) Pet Insurance and ASPCA Pet Health Insurance are the method of reimbursement and coverage for exam fees. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance coverage reimburses you a straight percentage of your veterinary bill for covered accidents and illnesses. AKC Pet Insurance reimburses you for a percentage of reasonable and customary charges rather than your actual costs. They also exclude exam fees, which are almost always part of your veterinary bill. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans cover those fees.

AKC Pet Insurance Plan Comparison

As you shop for pet insurance, it’s important to understand how companies like AKC Pet Insurance and the ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance program handle your reimbursements and what kinds of coverage are included in their plans.

Reimbursement Method

Both ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans and AKC Pet Insurance allow you to choose a 90%, 80%, or 70% reimbursement percentage. However, they differ in how they use this percentage to calculate your reimbursement. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans reimburse you based on a straight percentage of your veterinary bill. For example, if you selected the 90% option and had $500 in eligible costs after you met your deductible, you would be reimbursed $450.

AKC reimburses you based on reasonable and customary charges. This means that AKC will decide a “usual” or acceptable charge for specific veterinary services and then use this amount as a basis for your reimbursement. So, in the previous example, you may not be reimbursed 90% on the $500 total, but on whatever amount AKC determined to be reasonable and customary for the services your pet received. You might not know how much you’ll get reimbursed until your claim is processed.

Exam Fee

When you take your pet to the veterinarian for an accident or an illness, you’ll typically be charged an exam fee as part of the bill. If you enroll your pet in an ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan, this fee is included in your coverage. With AKC Pet Insurance, you’ll need to purchase coverage for exam fees at an additional cost.

Hereditary and Congenital Conditions

Like exam fees, coverage for hereditary and congenital conditions, such as hip dysplasia and cherry eye, is offered as an optional add-on with AKC Pet Insurance. You’ll need to add it to your plan and pay extra for it. With ASPCA Pet Health Insurance coverage, you won’t have to try to figure out if you need this coverage or not since it is included in your plan.

Alternative Therapies and Behavioral Conditions

AKC Pet Insurance only offers coverage for alternative therapies and behavioral conditions in some states. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans provide this coverage in all states.

Prescription Food and Supplements

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance coverage can help you manage the costs of prescription foods and supplements when they’re used to treat a covered condition (not for general maintenance or weight management). AKC Pet Insurance does not offer this coverage.

Health Requirements for Illness Coverage

If your pet has ever been diagnosed with or shown symptoms of diabetes, Cushing's Disease, feline immunodeficiency virus (FeLV), or feline leukemia virus (FIV), you won’t be able to sign them up for illnesses coverage with AKC Pet Insurance. With ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans, your pet is eligible to enroll for illness coverage regardless of health conditions. Just keep in mind that pre-existing conditions are not eligible for coverage.

Upper Age Limit

If your pet is more than 9 years old, you won’t be able to enroll them in AKC Pet Insurance. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans do not have an upper age limit.

Multiple Pet Discount

With ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans, you can save 10% on additional pets. AKC Pet Insurance only offers a 5% multiple pet discount.
