Frequently-Asked Questions about our dog insurance

Our typically curious and energetic four-legged family members tend to act before they think, which can get them into trouble. They can get hurt in all sorts of ways, like running too fast down the stairs, getting into a scrape with another animal, or eating something they shouldn’t. They can also suffer from illnesses, such as ear infections, stomach troubles, skin issues, urinary problems, and cancer.

Pet insurance can help you take great care of your dog when they get hurt or sick. It reimburses you for covered veterinary expenses, so you can provide them with the treatments they need to get better with less worry about the cost.

If you enroll your dog in Complete CoverageSM, you can use your insurance to help manage your veterinary costs if they get hurt or sick. This plan also covers hereditary conditions, such as hip dysplasia and eye disorders, and alternative therapies, like hydrotherapy, acupuncture, and stem cell treatments. Plus, it includes coverage for behavioral conditions, including fur pulling, destructive chewing, and excessive barking.

Only looking for a little financial cushion for accidents? You can choose our Accident-Only plan if you just want to cover your dog for injuries.

More veterinarians are recommending prescription foods and supplements to help dogs with certain health problems. Complete CoverageSM incudes coverage for these products when they’re used to treat a covered condition (not for general maintenance or weight management).

Yes, genetic and congenital conditions are covered by Complete CoverageSM.

With Complete CoverageSM, you have the freedom to visit any licensed veterinarian, veterinary specialist, or emergency clinic in the US or Canada. This means you can stay with your current veterinarian if you like. You’ll be covered if you go on the road with your dog.

By the way, there are no referrals or preauthorization needed for specialists, such as oncologists, ophthalmologists, or dermatologists. Just visit the specialist your dog needs and submit a claim as usual.

Complete CoverageSM does not include preventive care coverage, but you can add it to your plan at a low additional cost. It can help you manage the costs of services that keep your dog healthy, such as annual exams, heartworm medication, vaccines, dental cleanings, and more.

We offer two options for preventive care coverage. They reimburse you up to a set amount for a list of covered services. You don’t have to satisfy your deductible before you can be reimbursed, and there’s no waiting period for this coverage to start.

  • Pick your annual limit: This is the most you can get reimbursed during your plan year. We have annual limit options ranging from $3,000 to unlimited, but we find that a $5,000 or $10,000 limit is the right fit for most people. If you choose a lower annual limit, you’ll pay a lower premium. If you go with a higher one, you’ll have the potential to get reimbursed more per plan year.
  • Choose your annual deductible:</span > You can choose a $100, $150, or $250 annual deductible. If you opt for a higher deductible, you can reduce your premium. Just keep in mind you’ll need to satisfy that higher amount before you can start getting reimbursed.
  • Select a reimbursement percentage:</span > You can opt to get reimbursed 70%, 80%, or 90% of covered veterinary costs. A lower reimbursement percentage will give you a lower premium. However, you’ll get less back on your covered claims.

When you choose your annual coverage limit, we suggest you go with the highest amount you think you might spend on accidents and illnesses in a year. You may be able to raise your coverage limit later, but it will require starting a new policy. Also, any conditions your dog had before the new policy starts will be considered pre-existing and not eligible for coverage.

Pre-existing conditions are injuries or illnesses that come up or show symptoms before your plan goes into effect or during a waiting period. Like most pet insurance plans, Complete CoverageSM does not cover pre-existing conditions. However, these conditions may be covered in the future if they can be cured and free of symptoms and treatments for 180 days.

You can change your dog insurance policy at the start of a new policy period. However, re-writing your policy will make any conditions your pet has had pre-existing.
