One of the biggest differences between ASPCA Pet Health Insurance and Trupanion has to do with veterinary exam fees. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans covers exam fees, which are part of nearly every veterinary bill. Trupanion does not cover these charges even when the exam is related to a covered condition.

Trupanion Pet Insurance Plan Comparison

From exam fees to deductibles, there are some significant differences between ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans and Trupanion that are important to know as you shop around.

Exam Fees

With Trupanion pet insurance, exam fees are not covered, even if the condition is otherwise eligible for coverage. Exam fees are included in pretty much every veterinary bill. ASPCA® Pet Insurance plans help you manage the costs of exam fees for covered conditions.

Deductibles

ASPCA® Pet Insurance plans have an annual deductible with options of $100, $250, and $500, which allows you to customize your plan to suit your budget and coverage needs. If you choose a higher deductible, you can lower your premium, but you will need to meet a higher amount before you can start getting reimbursed. You only need to meet this deductible once a year no matter how many times your pet gets hurt or sick.

Trupanion coverage has a per condition deductible. That means you’ll need to meet this amount every time your pet is diagnosed with a new condition.

Illness Waiting Period

The Trupanion waiting period for illness coverage is 30 days. If your pet gets sick during the first month of your coverage, that illness won’t be eligible for coverage. It will also be considered a pre-existing condition and won’t be eligible for coverage in the future. ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans have an illness waiting period of only 14 days.

Preventive Care Coverage

ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans offer two options for preventive care coverage, which can be added to your plan at a low additional cost. Trupanion does not offer wellness coverage at all. Even if you’re not considering wellness coverage, you may want to choose a provider who offers it in case you change your mind later.

Accident Only Plan

We offer an accident only plan for pet parents who just want some financial cushion for accidents. Trupanion does not offer an accident only option.

Alternative Therapies and Behavioral Conditions

Alternative therapies (such as acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and massage), behavioral conditions (with symptoms like excessive barking, destructive chewing, or going outside the litter box), and stem therapy are all optional add-ons with Trupanion. You’ll need to pay extra to add each of these types of coverage to your Trupanion plan. The ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance program includes all of this coverage in our Complete CoverageSM plan.

Prescription Food

Trupanion has coverage for prescription food up to 50% of the cost for up to 2 months. ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans offer this coverage without a separate reimbursement percentage or time limit to treat covered conditions (not for general maintenance or weight management).

Multiple Pet Discounts

ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance has a 10% multiple pet discount for all additional pets, while Trupanion does not offer any discounts for covering more than one pet. If you currently only have one pet, you might not think this matters. But you may want to add another cat or dog to your family in the future, in which case the 10% discount would save you money on each pet after your most expensive pet.

*We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee if no claims are filed; 15-days in LA and ME. Not available in NY.
